World of Warcraft #01

8393_400×600.jpg

People tend to believe that there is a specific kind of readers usually buying and reading comic books, the same kind of readers that have to go through a pretty hard time of acne in high school, listen to music genres that would make their parents’ ears bleed and play video games all night long. Well, there are of course exceptions but let’s face it, people tend to be right. That is precisely why most widely known comics’ publishers choose stories and series with subjects that would be familiar to their potential reader, like mini series about famous serial killers from horror movies (God only knows how many Jason, Freddie and Chucky comics we had), cliché stories about your usual misunderstood teenager whose skills are revealed in 10-75 issues (depending on the sales) and, why not, adaptations of video games. How long did you think it would take them to make an ongoing series about the most played game in the world?

There have been a few tries to adapt the versatile and unique universe of World of Warcraft in many different ways but most of them lead to disappointing, at least, results. There was the Sunwell Trilogy, a manga about a dragon and those trying to kill or help him, I read it about a year ago but wasn’t impressed at all, black and white, not much of a story and female characters with big boobs (I really have no idea if they published the other two parts of the trilogy). There are also some soft cover books with stories based on the WoW mythology but still, none of the really big names in the comic industry had shown actual interest in the potential of a huge world with an immense storyline that keeps about 8 million people occupied in the biggest massive multiplayer role playing game ever made. That’s not the case anymore.

Starting this November Wildstorm will try to fit WoW in a monthly ongoing series and although available information are extremely limited it seems like pretty serious work. The first story arc will be about a human (warrior by the looks of the cover) found on the shores of Kalimdor with no memory of his past whatsoever. He is soon captured and enslaved by an Orc Shaman and finds himself fighting both Horde and Alliance characters with the aid of his new companion, most of who are not even of the same race.

For those of you that are familiar with WoW it seems like a pretty standard rpg story, a man starting from nothing, creating a party with different characters and fighting everything in his way. Will the main character change after the first 6-issue story? Will it cover the known WoW mythology or expand and create new stories and heroes (that might also appear in the new upcoming expansion for the game)? Will it be good for Warcraft fans and other comic book readers or just another rip-off of a successful series of video games? We’ll know pretty soon!

(I have to admit I was desperately trying not to quote Illidan “You are not prepared”, darn I knew I wouldn’t make it to the end…)

Alan Moore - Wild Worlds

240px-mooreross.jpgI never liked crossovers between entirely different characters fro comic books, most of the Superman vs Spiderman or Batman vs The Punisher stuff were boring, predictable and well, did I mention boring? This though, is an entirely different story, a book where Alan Moore’s most famous creations meet in new stories written by himself, it should be at least interesting!

Coming up on May Wild Worlds will be a new title combining characters by Moore’s previous works with Wildstorm and others. In this first attempt the story will include the WildCats against Spawn (if he manages to create an interesting Spawn story after all this time of same and same by Image it will be a miracle), a story about Majestic, an appearance of Deathblow (who returned with his new ongoing series in Wildstorm a few months ago), Voodoo and others not yet announced.

My belief that this might be a good book is based on Alan Moore and only him, only the idea of Spawn speaking in capital, outlined letters about how the unfair fate midjudged him while striking the Spartan with his chains, nah, it’s not for me. is also a character with big potential I never came to really like, I hope this will be a new opening for the character, anyway if anyone can give him depth that’s Moore. It still looks like a risk for an acclaimed artist with few (if not none) mistakes in his bibliography but I guess we’ll find out soon enough if it was worth it!

Alan Moore – The Black Dossier

250px-the_league_of_extraordinary_gentleman.jpgMan, if you don’t know Alan Moore, you’re reading the wrong stuff here. One of the greatest ever in the business Moore created some of the best comics ever published, V for Vendetta, The Watchmen, Batman – The Killing Joke, Swamp Thing, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, From Hell and so, so many more, most of his stories made it to the big screen with usually catastrophic results. This one and the next blog will be dedicated to him and two of his upcoming pieces of work, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: The Black Dossier and Wild Worlds.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was a landmark in the comics community, a story so retro yet so close, borrowing elements from most of our favorite works of literature in a way so complex and elaborating and crafty you needed hours to find every hint and clue in every page. The League is a group of special people (in ways a lot different than the X-Men I assure you) recruited by the British secret service, responsible for the most peculiar matters. It includes Miss Wilhelmina Murray (from Bram Stoker’s Dracula), Captain Nemo (from Jule Verne’s 20.000 Leagues Under the Sea), Allan Quatermain, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the Invisible Man and many more characters appearing in the story, all of them previously created by other aujul15-3004342006.jpgthors in famous books, all settled in a Victorian set (although there are rumors that there will be more Leagues in the future in other time settings).

In this new 208 page hard-cover book the story moves to the 1950’s, Mina Murray and the rejuvenated Allan Quatermain along with the new members of the League search for the , a file containing all the secrets of the League’s history, in an attempt to save it from utter destruction. New era, new characters, some of the old favorite ones, a worthy Alan Moore title, I’m thrilled! Oh yeah, there’s also a bummer in this, it won’t be available till October, patience my friends, patience…

The Boys

boys02.jpgI am currently subscribed for around 25 ongoing comic series, some of them proved to be good, many disappointing and rarely they come out better than expected, The Boys by Garth Ennis and Richard Robertson (Transmetropolitan, Space Beaver, The Punisher, Spiderman) turned out to be the brightest example of the last category. Sure I knew it was Ennis, the man who wrote some of the best Hellblazer stories, created the Preacher, turned The Authority into a great book, made even the Punisher an almost likeable character and left his personal touch in so many other books (Pride and Joy, Legends of the Dark Knight, 303, Judge Dredd), but there is a skeptic part in me after so many disappointments, mistrustful even to the safest bets. Luckily The Boys were a great creation, cynic, funny, breathtaking, but the disappointment didn’t take long to arrive, after 6 issues Wildstorm seems to have canceled it!

Rumors are that DC was deeply concerned about the extreme content of the book, the violent scenes were too messy and the part with the mouse crawling out of someone’s pants was more than they could endure in a Wildstorm title, so they canceled the whole thing and announced that it will probably continue with Dynamite in June, when there will be also a trade paperback with the first 6 issues originally published by them. If you have pre-ordered #07-#09 (they were available until recently in the official Wildstorm site) you might want to check it, DC announced also that all orders concerning The Boys have been canceled also. On the other side Ennis and Robertson seem quite comfortable with the developments, they thanked their former employers for the easy transaction and now have a working environment where any kind of censorship will be unlike, I suppose Dynamite is thrilled to have a sure winner in their roster.

the_boys_-1.jpgIf this is the first time you meet The Boys, it’s a typical Ennis story, it mind remind you a little the Authority. This is a world where super-powered humans run the show, but if you’re looking for heroes you’ll be frustrated. They’re mean, they’re stupid, they’re ambitious and greedy, most of them are even perverts! A special group of people with even greater powers is assembled to keep them in line but if you expect them to do it in the conventional way, well, that’ll be your second frustration in the series. Hugh, their latest member is a relatively normal guy (who looks suspiciously like the man from Shawn of the Dead) who saw his girlfriend die in a horrific way when a super team happened to pass through, he joins The Boys for revenge, justice, change, a chance to the American dream! I should warn you, if you don’t have a good stomach you should consider leaving this one for the rest of us though…
