Silver Surfer – Requiem #01

The latest Marvel Knights title is here and it’s about out favorite silver bald guy, his own “end” mini series, Silver Surfer: Requiem! With his debut on the big screen coming in a few months with the new Fantastic 4 film and his latest appearances in the Ultimate Universe it was inevitable that there would be an event of his own, and this is it, the fall of the Silver Surfer in a 4-issue mini series.

For centuries he was the herald of Galaktus, the world devourer, he surfed through space to find worlds capable of sustaining his master a little more while they would be extinguished by his hunger. But everything changes when he discovers Earth and its heroes, a planet that actually has a hope, there he makes his stand with new friends and allies and faces his master, earning his freedom and salvation. Now, years later, the Silver Surfer feels that his death is imminent and decides to return to the place he sacrificed to save, the one part of the universe he kept himself away from for all those centuries, his home world, Zenn-La. But to do that he must travel great lengths, meet old allies and villains and even if he succeeds there’s no way he could know what he’ll meet there.

Coming from May till August from Marvel this is a potential ending to the Silver Surfer saga. It’s a pretty popular subject, like a What If mini series with a more realistic subject, but will it be really good or just another mini series to fill up the monthly catalog? Only time will tell.

Iron Man – The Movie

424px-iron_man_teaser_poster.jpg

There was a time when comic movies where nothing but shameful events for us, comic fans, or best case just a good laugh, but fortunately that time has passed. Most of the movies based on comic books nowadays are carefully produced by the biggest studios and top actors, directors line up to have a chance of offering their own aspect of those modern myths. After Spider-Man, the X-Men, Hellblazer and other famous titles, the new film coming in May 2008 will be about one of the greatest heroes in the Marvel Universe, Iron Man!

Not much are known about the story but it seems like the first Iron Movie will be about the health problems of Tony Stark and the creation of the Iron Man suit after several different levels of development (the following picture that goes around in the web might look a little medieval but no worries, check the teaser poster and you’ll see the familiar red and yellow outfit). The bad guy is rumored to be the Mandarin which is both good and bad, he’s one of the oldest Iron Man villains but still not really well known and it might have something to do with a disturbingly politically correct storyline, West against East etc. Robert Downey Jr will play the role of Tony Stark / Iron Man in a casting that might prove the best pick in similar cases.

The next days we will try to offer you as many information as possible about this upcoming event, the cast, the plot rumors, the production steps, everything that you’d want to know a year before Iron Man’s arrival, until then patience!

World War Hulk

wwhulkwb001_cov.jpg

Most of the heroes in Marvel series have undergone several changes after the significant events of Civil War but none as important as the Hulk! Now, after all those months that the green hot blooded menace spent away from us he’s coming back, and he’s really mad.

In the beginning of Civil War Nick Fury asked Bruce Banner’s help to deactivate a weapon satellite made by Hydra years ago, Banner accepted and Hulk was sent in outer space to destroy a potential threat to human kind. A threat that proved to have been created not by terrorists but by SHIELD and Fury himself, so after his mission was accomplished the situation changed dramatically. SHIELD found it convenient that Hulk would not return on Earth and the other heroes discovered a chance to get rid of him at last in order to protect civilian lives, so instead of bringing him back they threw him in a black hole to be left alone in a world empty of intelligent life forms!

Of course nothing worked out as planned and Hulk found himself on a planet scourged by war and death, a battlefield between imperial and rebel forces in a war he didn’t understand and didn’t want to be involved, but things change when he proves to be the savior a whole world waited for, the Green Scar, and a whole new chapter in Hulk’s history opened which you can follow in the storyline. But enough with that, Planet Hulk is over and the Hulk is coming back frustrated, betrayed, confused and very, very mad. They have sent him away when he tried to save them but he will never do that mistake again, the puny humans will pay for what they’ve done to him, Hulk smash!

Fantastic 4 – After the civil war

The Civil War is over and all the Marvel characters that got involved one way or the other (which might include all there are) continue in their separate series through the changes they suffered, well or bad. Spidey is back in black, Cap is hurt somewhere in a S.H.I.E.L.D base, the Iron Man leads the registered heroes, but what about Fantastic 4?

If you followed the events of Civil War you will know how they affected Marvel’s most famous family, Sue and Reed Richards came one step away from separation (Sue was frustrated by the turn things took and the outcomes of her husband’s actions like Hulk being thrown in a black hole and the Thor clone murdering one of their own) and only in the last moment they agreed to give their marriage a second chance, one that would need their entire attention and effort. So Mr. and Mrs. Fantastic took off leaving their team lacking two members, or do they? The second most famous couple in the Marvel Universe takes their place in the quartet in issue #544, Storm and the Black Panther, after their recent wedding in the middle of the war!

I sincerely doubt this will be a long term change in the series, I find it hard to believe they will be able to tie in effectively these characters in the same book, especially the Thing and the Human Torch who are totally connected with the two missing members of their team, but who knows, maybe for 5 issues or so it will be a nice change. What seems even more interesting though is the turn the story takes in issue #545 with the return of Galaktus and the Silver Surfer, can you imagine the Black Panther against the devourer of the worlds? I can’t!

Civil War – Closing Time

civilwarfrontline1.jpg

A common policy in the comics industry is that when sales go down events goes up! Especially if you are a Marvel fan you might have noticed something wrong with their main Universe, those old-fashioned issues where the good guy fought the evil one in a big battle, well no more of those, nowadays we have to read about cosmic, historical events every month. But is this the actual point or are they really afraid to drastically change something out there?

civilwar01.jpg

The Civil War is over, the super hero registration act has passed and as hard as I try to find what changed in the Marvel titles the only difference I see is Spider-Man being unmasked, his family in danger and him back in the black suite (for 4 months before he finds a new one I guess). Captain America dies in issue #25 of his own series and in Civil War – The Initiative we find out that nooo, Rogers is not really dead but hidden in a secret SHIELD facility, the X-Men are again on the run (big difference), Iron-Man is assembling a new team of Avengers (wow, innovative), only poor Hulk had to be thrown into a black hole (what, you thought he wouldn’t return? Check World War Hulk Prologue: World Breaker #1)! So is anything ever going to change, and do we want to?

This whole thing reminds me of similar events and how they too changed nothing, like the House of M and Infinite Crisis. It’s the perfect way to attract attention to your main titles by killing a couple of the secondary characters nobody would ever read about, present them like decent people and pretend it made a difference to the first class heroes. So DC killed the Blue Beetle, who gives a damn (except from those guys I met on line the other day creating a poll to make them bring him back)? Marvel killed Goliath and some other nobodies who might return anytime from another dimension or a gate Dr Strange will make or a black hole or something. Nothing’s ever going to change because deep inside we don’t want to; these heroes are our favorites for reasons that don’t allow them to change. You think otherwise? Well give Spider-Man 6 more months with his identity revealed and you’ll see!

Spider-man – Back in Black!

asm539_cov.jpg

frndsm019.jpgNope, Spidey’s not performing AC/DC songs, this is even more unbelievable as the most popular character of Marvel the last half century goes dark once again in many years! After the cataclysmic events of Civil War and the changes in the Marvel Universe (the much, much more realistic changes than the House of M) Spider-Man returns in the black outfit, the symbiotic alien suit we knew all these years as Venom. The very few info released by now mention that Peter Parker is left in a dark place where he meets the shadow of his past, and from there things are only going to get worse for him.

So is this an actual turn in the development of Spider-Man or just a publicity stunt for the upcoming movie, where the story of the black suit will be told once again? These last years there have been so many changes in the Marvel Universe that promised long term effects and very few of them lasted more than a few months, is this also going to be one of them? No matter, for many readers, including myself, Spider-Man’s dark alter ego was the most interesting part in the character’s evolution, a time when he had to face his wildest instincts and a look more stylish than ever! If this is an attempt to promote the upcoming movie, a branch of the Civil War story or a totally different matter that may grasp us with its own advantages, nobody knows. The next 4 months will show, for now this is the Checklist for March:

The Eternals

eternals1.jpg

There are a few things I discovered through comics more serious than just fun, and one of the best was the work of Neil Gaiman. I still haven’t found a world he created that I did not like, or even better sink into; I am currently reading his Anansi Boys and enjoy each page with the happiness of a six year old kid opening his present! His latest creation with Marvel was a tale of gods and humans, of how our world was created and some of those present in that moment still walking among us. The return of the Eternals!

eternals2.jpgThe Eternals were introduced by previous marvel series, kind of indifferent if you ask me. Immortal beings that came to Earth million of years ago and offered the mammals they found here the potential to become humans, something like Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey opening scene, they were sent by other, superb entities called The Celestials that created and watched them. In this new aspect of the story by Neil Gaiman (Books of Magic, The Sandman, American Gods, Anansi Boys, Stardust) and John Romita Jr. (X-Men, Daredevil, Thor, Hulk) the Eternals are living as normal people with most of them having no recollection at all of their powers and nature, at least until certain events unlock their memories and begin a chain of events that might change the route of history!

This is a Gaiman story and the way I see it that’s the only credential it needs to be in my bookcase, but it is also a Romita Jr. book (he’s one of the best known Marvel artists) and it presents a story with unused potential which finally gets the depth it deserves. The 7 issues should be sold out by now (the limited series was originally planned to last 6 issues but one more was added) but if you are willing to give it a try, which I recommend, the hard-cover collection will by out this May, get your own copy!

Spiderman 3 - The Movie

posterspiderman3.jpg

Films inspired by comics, most of us, in our minds, connect this phrase with traumatic experiences including the shameless massacre of characters that evolved for many years through the pages of our favorite books. There are of course rare cases where this rule does not apply, remarkable creations which stayed in the spirit of the original or not, but anyway offered us the pleasure of a great movie (Sin City, 300, V for Vendetta and others). Spiderman may not be the best one among them but it could easily be selected between those with which you’ll have the most fun, and with the third part being released in May 4th the expectations are huge.

Marvel treats every Spiderman movie with the seriousness befitting their most popular character, the first two parts though not masterpieces of the 7th art were terrific action movies with the proper respect for the story as it was presented in comics so many times. This time nothing seems to have changed, the production indicates it’ll be one of the blockbusters of spring; the promotion has started months ago and the information about the story released are more than interesting. This time Peter finds himself enjoying the benefits of his increasing popularity while preparing to propose to Mary Jane when the police informs him that a new suspect for his Uncle Ben’s murder has been found, Flint Marko a.k.a. the Sandman! Spidey gets in the middle of the biggest fight of his life, he’s hunting Sandman at the same moment fighting Harry Osborn (who has become the New Goblin) and that’s nothing in front of the threat coming from outer space, the alien symbiote that will become his suite and try to corrupt him and later give birth to his nemesis, Venom!

spiderman-730179.jpg

The story is really exciting, combining some of the greatest adversaries of Spiderman in his entire history. I trust that the creators will choose to use some of the good Sandman stories, most of his old ones where lame with Spiderman imprisoning him in a vacuum cleaner and other similar cases, my only concern is the fact that the New Goblin story will be a mixture of the traditional Marvel Universe and the Ultimate Universe with Harry Osborn emerging as a different character, made especially for this movie. Anyway, the risk is not really that grave, best case we get a great movie about one of our favorite characters, worst we watch 90 minutes of something told before, don’t worry though mate, it won’t be as bad as Hulk!

Daredevil - The Death of Elektra

11.jpg

One of the most interesting and historic hidden identities in the Marvel Universe, Matt Murdock spends his days practicing the law, a blind lawyer defending the weak and following the rules, but when night falls he wears the red and becomes the fear of Hell’s Kitchen, a fearsome vigilante, Daredevil himself! Daredevil was originally created by Stan Lee (Daredevil #01, April 1964) and further explored by great writers and artists like Jack Kirby, John Romita Sr., Wally Wood, Brian Michael Bendis and othedaredevil-181-25.jpgrs, but it was Frank Miller the one who offered the series the recognition and popularity it deserved. Today’s blog is dedicated to one of the issues that changed this legendary character forever, specifically the 181st issue of the first volume of Daredevil titled “Last Hand”, or as we’d call it “The Death of Elektra”!

Killing a character in an ongoing story is always hard, imagine what it was like in a case like this where Elektra was an extremely important and interesting figure in the scenario, she was Matt’s first love, she knew the secret of his identity, she fought him in every occasion balancing between her evil choices as a hired assassin and the affection to her nemesis, some might say she was more intriguing than Daredevil himself. After sparing Foggy Nelson’s life (Murdock’s best friend) Elektra gets in a combat with Bullseye, a hired killer as herself but paranoid and completely evil, a man able to turn every object into a lethal weapon. She seems to be winning and draws first blood when Bullseye cuts her throat with a throwing poker card saying his best known line:

“You’re pretty good… but me… I’m magic”

After which he stabbes her with her own sai. Elektra crawls all the way to Matt’s house to die in his arms while Bullseye watches them hidden in the nearby crowd.

daredevil-181-23.jpg

daredevil-181-24.jpgThe death of Elektra was a landmark, a significant point in comics history, it was maybe the first time a popular and important character got killed in order to help the story evolve. After that Daredevil is presented more angry and scary, his fights with Bullseye always involve his desire for revenge; Elektra haunts his dreams and affects his life. Of course later the writers were unable to stick to their first decision and made some quite louse storylines about her return (her appearances in volume 2 were much better though) but we have to remember this was even before the death of Robin, back in 1982, before even that ghastly Daredevil movie we had to endure recently.

Jump in and see the real thing in the Daredevil comic books, even you poor scared friend who watched Ben Affleck jumping roofs and kicking around. It’s a different experience, I swear in my hyper sensitive senses!

The Dark Tower – The Gunslinger Born

acvr.jpgGet ready, here comes Stephen King and the next chapter of his magnum opus, The Dark Tower (actually more like the previous chapter since this is a prequel of the seven world-famous books)! Published by Marvel this 7 issue series is supposed to be the first arc of a limited number of stories, unknown parts of Roland’s life will be exposed and all those things you wanted to know but were never told will be revealed through this creation plotted by Robin Furth (King’s research assistant), dialogued by Peter David (Spectacular Spider-Man, X-Factor, Teen Titans, Spider-Man 2099 etc), illustrated by Jae Lee (Batman - Jekyll and Hyde, Hellshock, Witchblade – Demon etc) and colored by Richard Isanove (Daredevil – Father, Ultimate X-Men, Arcanum etc).

So, is it worth it? Well, I’m really not sure; I guess it depends on how you look at it. Yeah, it’s beautifully drawn, the story follows the original and if you’ve never read the books you’ll probably be introduced to them smoothly and yeah, the second issue is pretty cool with Roland fleeing to Hambry, facing the Big Coffin Hunters and meeting Susan Delgado but if you’re looking for something new, for now you’ll be disappointed. The writer seems to be afraid to present what was promised, which is missing parts of Roland’s life, and simply repeats already known facts from the books, such as the fight between Roland and his trainer, Cort, or the battle of Hambry, I guess they’ll have to show some creativity in the next arcs but anyway, this one doesn’t offer that much, at least yet. Still, it does have some emotional value for all of us that read every Dark Tower book with the same enthusiasm and love, watching that dark, western atmosphere drawn in front of your eyes, a decadent civilization in its last days, a world that moved forward and a man looking forever for the Dark Tower and sacrificing everything for it.

blz04.jpg

I have to admit, I was deeply disappointed by the way some of the characters were presented but that was by no means the creators’ fault, it’s just that I imagined Cort differently, Susan Delgado looked in my mind like a girl I once knew, Roland was so much taller and the Crimson King never occurred to me as a huge spider, and that’s the weakest part of The Dark Tower as a comic, it’s a book series that lasted for all those years because we all imagined it in our own ways and had it painted in our heads like a thousand stories, another one for each. So will you endanger the feeling you got from the seven books of Stephen King‘s The Dark Tower to discover a comic book which might make the experience even better or destroy it? Well mate, that’s totally up to you…
